Network discovery in Ubuntu 12.04

I needed a tool to scan my local network for connected devices. A search indicates that nmap is the tool of choice. Install using:

sudo apt-get install nmap

A scan of a LAN on 192.168.1.* is accomplished with the command:

nmap 192.168.1.0/24
